“I can work in my garden and not have muscle strain. Thank you for your concern for my welfare.”
EnhanceFitness, an evidenced-based program, offers multi-component group exercises in community settings for older adults. The program was launched in 1993 after successful research studies conducted by the University of Washington (UW). The study found that participation in EnhanceFitness improved physical and psychological functioning in older adults and offered an effective way to prevent functional decline.

EnhanceFitness classes meet three times per week, one hour per session. Other program features include:
  • The instructor leads the group in 30 minutes of an endurance-type physical activity, of at least moderate intensity.
  • Each EnhanceFitness class includes specific strengthening exercises for the major muscle groups of the legs, trunk, arms, and shoulders.
  • The EnhanceFitness instructor provides individual attention, and demonstrates variations and modifications to the program to fit the need of each participant.
  • The EnhanceFitness exercises are offered in two formats, designed to be safe for physically unfit older adults, including the “near frail” as well as more active seniors.
  • Participants are so enthusiastic that 90% say they would recommend this program to a friend.
EnhanceFitness benefits:
  • Prevents falls
  • Maintains or improves physical function, muscle strength, balance and flexibility
  • Lowers health care costs
  • Provides a social benefit
