Care Connection for Aging Services will host free, one-hour webinars to inform consumers about the rollout of new Medicare cards.
The sessions, conducted by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, will be “webinars” shown at the centers in all of Care Connection’s 13-county area during April. All are open to the public, and people with Medicare, their spouses and their caregivers are encouraged to attend.
The federal government is removing Social Security numbers from all Medicare cards to lessen the risk of medical identity theft. The new cards will have a unique number specifically assigned to each Medicare beneficiary.
The Missouri SMP (Senior Medicare Patrol) has advised consumers to guard against would-be scammers who will use the issuance of the new cards to try to defraud consumers.
“Medicare has asked us to help them inform consumers,” said Rona McNally, Care Connection Director of Special Projects and statewide Director of the Missouri SMP. “With every change in Medicare, scammers take the opportunity to try to take advantage of people with Medicare. The more information we can give to people about this change, the safer the process is going to be for them.”
The webinars, conducted by the Kansas City regional CMS office, will address the new card design, the timeframe of the mailings, and what people with Medicare should do to ensure they receive their new cards.
