Are you a diabetic who faces the day-to-day challenges of how to best live with your chronic condition? What if you could get most of the tools you need to manage your diabetes in a six-week interactive, free course?
We are offering a free Diabetes Self-Management Program Class at the Sedalia Senior Center, 312 S. Washington, at 1:30 p.m., every Monday for six weeks, beginning March 2.
The course will be offered free to people 60 and older who are diagnosed with diabetes and their caregivers.
In the United States, 34.2 million people or about 10.5% of the population have diabetes. Of those, 21.4 percent don’t even know they have the disease.
Helping people take charge of the condition is the aim of the course. Topics covered will include healthy eating, physical activity, stress management, understanding emotions, communication, problem-solving and decision-making, medication management and working with health professionals.
The course is designed so that class participants have small-group discussions and learn from each other in a friendly, confidential atmosphere.
Participants will learn the importance of setting goals and setting forth a system to meet those goals.
The class has been proven in a university study to help people learn to live well with diabetes.
