New Give 5 program seeks to motivate retirees to volunteer
If you are a senior adult looking for new opportunities for 2023, consider “giving five” hours a month to help reduce poverty in Johnson County.
Care Connection is planning the January launch of Give 5, a newly created, innovative social program that matches individuals who are retired or nearly retired with the perfect volunteer opportunity. There is no cost to participants.
The first Give 5 class begins in Johnson County on Jan. 19, 2023, and will continue for three or four Thursdays, said Dawn Moore, Volunteer Coordinator for Care Connection for Aging Services.
During that time, the group will visit more than a dozen nonprofits in Johnson County. Participants can expect to have fun, make new friends, and learn about volunteer opportunities that match their talents, passions, and personalities.

The first round of Give 5 sessions will be designed specifically as a way for retirees to apply their talents and passions with a focus on diminishing poverty in the community.
“These volunteer opportunities will ensure that participants have purpose and relevance in their lives after they leave the workforce,” Moore said. “This program offers a fun, social opportunity for participants to experience a sampling of the many and varied volunteer opportunities within Johnson County.”
The goal is that each participant will commit to “give five” hours a month to one of the nonprofit programs.
The program’s goal is to introduce participants to new people and new ways of thinking via a shared experience and the bonding that occurs among participants – as well as link individuals with their true passions within their community’s non-profit organizations.
Each meeting day will last six or seven hours, with lunch and snacks included. Day One will include orientation and speakers. Then participants board a bus to visit various nonprofit locations. Visits to nonprofits allow participants to better understand the types of volunteer opportunities available.
